Glaubt man den Kollegen von c|net steht das SDK - wie geplant - in den Startlöchern und kommt am 6. März zu uns bzw. den wartenden Entwicklern. Das für den kommenden Donnerstag angesetzte “town hall meeting” in Apples Cupertino Stammsitz verspricht “some exciting new enterprise features” und gibt so Anlass genug, über einen  fast sicheren Release-Termin des SDKs zu spekulieren. Wir warten ab und bedanken uns bei allen Mail-Schreibern.

Apple, Rumors, SDK

Well, it's still February now, but it looks as though the SDK may not officially make it out the door until next month, suggesting that rumors of a delay were on the money. Apple's now sending out invitations to the press for a special event to announce the iPhone's Software Development Kit, next week on March 6th.

The shindig, which takes place on Apple Campus at Building 4's Town Hall begins at 10AM Pacific, with registration starting at 9AM. The invitation reads:

Please joins us to learn about the iPhone software roadmap, including the iPhone SDK and some exciting new enterprise features.

We're guessing that the "enterprise features" in question have little to do with J.J. Abrams's forthcoming Star Trek movie—more's the pity. Perhaps Exchange support? In any case, we know that even though the iPhone doesn't have a big business presence, those who do have seem to like it. Let the countdowns officially begin.

Schöne Wörter in der Popmusik. Wir bekennen uns zu einer eigentümlichen Vorliebe, eigentümliche Worte in deutschen Popmusiktexten zu schätzen. Auch deshalb mögen wir eine Band wie „Tomte“ und ihren Vorturner Thees Uhlmann. Uhlmann, der oftmals schwer verdauliche Texte drechselt, die sich dem Sinn nach nur schwer erschließen, flicht immer wieder hübsche Wortperlen in seine Verse ein. „Antlitz“ gehört dabei zu seinen Lieblingen, jenes eigentümliche Wort, das früher häufiger benutzt wurde als heute und soviel wie Gesicht oder Angesicht bedeutet, ursprünglich aus dem gehobenen Sprachgebrauch stammt und heute beinahe verschwunden ist. Oder „nichtsdestotrotz“, das Uhlmann in einem Songtext „ein wunderschönes Wort“ nennt. Womit er Recht hat. Duden und Wikipedia sind sich einig, dass es sich bei diesem Adverb ursprünglich um eine scherzhafte Mischbildung – vermutlich aus dem studentischen Sprachgebrauch – aus „nichtsdestoweniger“ und „trotzdem“ handelt, die sich dann in die Umgangssprache eingeschlichen habe.
Jetzt hörten wir in einem Lied wieder so ein schönes Wort, das leider sehr selten geworden ist. Es heißt „verscheuern“, bedeutet so viel wie „verkaufen“ mit einem leicht negativen Zungenschlag, kommt vermutlich aus dem Niederdeutschen, wo „verschudern“ oder „verschutern“ so viel wie „tauschen“ hieß. Benutzt hat das Wort der Sänger und Songschreiber Gisbert zu Knyphausen, der wirklich so heißt, bisher eher unbekannt ist, es aber nicht bleiben wird. Dieser Tage landete sein Debütalbum auf unserem Schreibtisch, und wir wünschten uns, dieses Kleinod der deutschsprachigen Popmusik würde nicht erst Ende April, sondern gleich morgen erscheinen.

Kleinod. Kleinod ist auch so ein schönes deutsches Wort, das wir gerne mal gesungen hören würden. Uhlmann, übernehmen Sie!

Noch wird es wohl zu früh sein, ein wirklich umfassendes Round-Up aller Neuerungen der 1.1.4 Firmware zu bringen. Dank euren Kommentaren, euren Mails, sowie den üblichen Verdächtigen können wir euch jedoch bereits jetzt eine Hand voll Infos zur frisch veröffentlichten Firmware bringen:

• Nach Installation der 160MB großen 1.1.4 ist das iPhone mit Baseband 04.04.05_G ausgestattet.
• Die Kamera-Applikation läuft performanter, wackelt weniger und ist, schnellen Bewegungen gegenüber, toleranter.
• ZiPhone ist weiterhin in der Lage euer iPhone zu “jaikbreaken” und schafft sogar den SIM-Unlock (mittels eines Baseband-Downgrades auf eine vorherige Version), aktivieren lassen sich 1.1.4 iPhones ohne Vertrag jedoch noch nicht.
• Ein ZiPhone-Update ist in den kommenden 2-3 Tagen zu erwarten.
• Safari kommt mit einem verbesserten Cache-Feature. Weniger Seiten-Reloads, schnelleres öffnen der Web-Clips.
• Probleme der SMS-Reihenfolge (erstmals aufgetreten unter 1.1.3) sollten der Vergangenheit angehören.
• Bluetooth-Geräte haben keine bzw. weniger Pairing-Probleme.
• Von euch geschrieben eMails, die auf unerklärlichen Wegen weder verschickt noch im Postausgang gelandet sind, sollten euch nicht mehr belästigen.
• Die Verschlüsselung der 1.1. Ramdisk wurde bereits gebrochen. Neue Aktivierungs-Methoden sollten folgen.
• Das Root-Passwort ist immer noch “alpine” - Probleme mitOpenSSH und dem Installer werden hier behoben.
• Auch Webclips lassen sich nun verschieben ohne zu “ruckeln” (nicht mit “wackeln” verwechseln).

1.1.4, Kamera, SMS, Tipps, Update, ZiPhone

Friendfeed.com just opened its doors for everyone... you don't need an invite anymore to use this site, which can act as your feed reader, social network, and twitter-style mini blog all in one. Here are some tips & tricks for Friendfeed:

1. You can subscribe to any RSS feed at all, whether or not it's connected to a person. For instance, you could subscribe to social news site Reddit. Just go to Friend Settings -> Imaginary, click the create button, and give the friend a name (like "Reddit"). In the options dialog that opens, click Blog and enter the feed URL in question (like "http://reddit.com/.rss").
2. Similar to above, you can also subscribe to a Google News alert on any subject. Just visit Google News, set-up your preferred search, order by date and restrict the date to, say, a week, and copy the RSS feed. Paste the feed URL when adding an imaginary friend as described above. (Note the last time I tried, it was unfortunately necessary for your feed to contain at least one item for Friendfeed to accept it.)
3. Search Friendfeed content. Well, right now there is no official search feature at Friendfeed, only a search for friends... however, Friendfeed recently said this will be coming. In the meantime, you can use the site operator in Google web search, by typing site:friendfeed.com hello (where "hello" is your keyword of choice, and it can also be the name of someone at Friendfeed). You can also use the Friendfeed Google custom search engine I made or add the search gadget to iGoogle.
4. Hide yourself from the Friendfeed "everyone" tab. Everything that's posted on Friendfeed will also appear on the Friendfeed "everyone" tab as well as "friendfeed.com/yourname", meaning it gets indexed in Google, may be stumbled upon randomly and so on. Unless, that is – if I understand it right – if you configure your account settings to make your feed private. Just uncheck the "Public feed" box and hit the Save button.
5. Get more stuff to read. If you frequently visit Friendfeed but it doesn't update frequently enough for your tastes, consider adding more friend via Friend Settings -> Recommended. This sub-tab will show you a bunch of recommendations for new people, and hitting the subscribe button lets them feed you. (Then again, getting more input doesn't necessarily make you more productive, and you may find yourself suffering information overflow if you add too many people.)
6. Zoom in to better see your friends. When you go to your subscriptions page at Friend Settings -> My Subcriptions, you will see thumbnail photo portraits (or other avatar images) of your friends. These pics are low-quality though. You can zoom into all of them at once by typing this JavaScript into the address bar, or saving it as bookmark. The bookmarklet is shortened but here's a more readable version, showing how to iterate through the HTML DOM and tinker with tags:

7. Show your comments made in certain forums or blogs. Depending on the forum software, you may be able to apply the trick of adding a name-specific RSS feed as Tony Ruscoe detailed earlier. To track comments made in blogs, it might theoretically be possible to install your own OpenId server using e.g. phpMyID, and then adjust the code to generate database entries which in turn generate a public RSS feed on your server... a feed which you can then add to your services in Friendfeed.
8. Give feedback to Friendfeed. The Friendfeed makers are very responsive, and if there's a feature you'd like, they may listen. You can give feedback by subscribing to the creators and commenting on their items; by emailing feedback@friendfeed.com; by joining the Friendfeed Google group; by directly posting an item on Friendfeed using the "Share something" button, provided the Friendfeed makers are connected to you (directly or through friends); and by adding comments in the Friendfeed blog.
9. Add a Friendfeed widget to your blog... like the one Paul Buchheit is showing at his blog. Navigating to this widget via the Friendfeed tabs is currently disabled (though Friendfeed wants to bring it back to the interface)... but you can access it via the URL "http://friendfeed.com/embed?user=yourname" (replace "yourname" with your user name shortcut, like "john"). Other than the official widget, you could also look up your personal feed generated by Friendfeed (it's of a form like "friendfeed.com/?format=atom&auth=XF2JkfPtxWiD") and connect it to any RSS gadget.
10. Change the Friendfeed colors. If you're using Firefox, go to the folder %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[some name]\chrome (where "some name" is a semi-random string differing from system to system). Add a file named userContent.css, if it doesn't already exists, and write the following into it using a text editor:
    

    div#tabhead { background-color: yellow !important; }

    Restart Firefox and open Friendfeed, and you'll notice you changed the top color into yellow, or any other color of choice using RGB(1,2,3). You can undo the change by removing your line in the CSS file and restarting Firefox once again. (Note if you're using Internet Explorer, you can add user stylesheets a bit easier, by going to Tools -> Internet Options -> Accessibility -> Format documents using my style sheet)

Google Talk's gadget was a nice addition, but you couldn't use it to chat with unknown people or with the visitors of the site, like in Meebo Me. Now you can do that using the new chatback badges. You only need to add some code to your site and anyone could click on the generated badge to chat with you.


"A Google Talk chatback badge allows others to chat with you even if they haven't signed up for Google Talk or a Google Account. You can put the badge in your blog or website, and people who visit those pages can chat with you. The badge will display your online status (whether you're available to chat or not) and, optionally, your status message."

If someone clicks on the badge, a special version of the Google Talk gadget will open and he will be able to chat with you.


The conversations are private and only one-to-one, so other visitors won't be able to read them. For some strange reason, they're not even added in Gmail's chat section. Unfortunately, being constantly interrupted by other people is not very pleasant, so you can disable the link from your badge by setting your status to "busy" or by signing out of Google Talk.
